Block Ads on Google Chrome with Privoxy

Published in Google by sushaantu

We talked about Google Chrome few days back and we also mentioned that we can’t move to Chrome unless some Firefox extensions get compatible with Google Chrome. It seems like geeks have started to work towards making Chrome the next big thing.

A user at Geekzone has submitted a trick to block the ads on Google Chrome at GeekZone. It will certainly help users who love the firefox extension called AdBlock Plus and wanted a similar functionality on Google Chrome.

1. Install Privoxy.
2. Click on the Wrench icon in Chrome in the upper right corner.
3. Choose options>Under The Hood>Change proxy settings.
4. A windows box pops up, choose LAN settings.
5. Check off “Proxy settings” and in the address setting add 127.0.0.1 and in the port 8118.
6. If you have the option, you can also check off “Bypass proxy for local settings.”
7. Click “Ok”, close Google Chrome and restart it.

I used this trick on some big blogs and It was working pretty well. It works quite well against those obtrusive ads on big blogs which consume so much broadband. It was not working that well against Google text ads on Google sites that well though but it was almost fool-proof against flash ads. I am just wondering that this trick could create a havoc when used with that Incognita mode while browsing those “oh so private” sites.

The following message is displayed on TechCrunch while browsing through Chrome with Privoxy ON.
