Buy iPhone 3G in India, from August 22 on Airtel

Apple’s iPhone will be available to Indian mobile users through Bharti Airtel at the stroke of midnight on August 21, giving competitors like Nokia, Samsung and others a run for their money.

Millions of Airtel subscribers will be able to purchase the iPhone at Airtel’s Relationship Centres from August 22, a company statement said here.

“iPhone has been an iconic technological revelation of this year and Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector,” Sanjay Kapoor, President, Bharti Airtel mobile services, said.

Airtel and Vodaphone both made people book it before time, I am unsure how they are going to use that. Because that was not a pre-order, just booking.

IPhone is embedded with all 3G features and is twice as fast as the existing mobile phones. The phone also has in-built GPS system, that facilitates as a navigation and positioning tool. Airtel and Vodafone both will be launching iPhone with their plans. Vodafone is also expected to launch Apple’s iPhone this year itself.

Price is unknown yet :( But we expect it to be a lot more than what it is for in US and other countries, but power cellphone users have been waiting for this immensely and they will not worry about spending more. You already see people using unlocked iphone here, all got those through Grey channels.

Do not expect any complimentary starbucks coffee or goodies by the apple /airtel folks there, I am sure there will be a queue though. Take a day off.

With all the hustle bustle of the launch date being announced, I guess you missed out on the official pricing details that are available on TechDrunk (http://www.techdrunk.com/apple-iphone-3g-prices-finally-announced-enthusiasts-stumped/592/). I read their post and was shocked to see that 8GB model is for Rs. 31,000 and the 16 GB model is worth Rs. 37,000. You should give it a read at TechDrunk.
