I have been trying to figure this out for days now and I
can't find an answer anywhere. At first I thought that I
couldn't access the shared folders on my laptop from my
desktop because once I double-clicked a folder the
hourglass would appear and not go away. This afternoon I
tried to open up a folder and then left for a little
while. When I got back 15 minutes later it had opened.
So, I tested it and it takes about 10 minutes to open.
Going from my laptop to my desktop I can open folders
fairly quickly with about a one second delay. I don't
understand what could be the problem.
As a side note that might help solve this problem. I
sync both computers every day after work. I use a
program called Backer 6.2. When I first start to sync,
the computer (desktop) hangs for a long time. So, as an
experiment I let it hang and opened a "new session" of
Backer and tried to sync. It worked almost immediately
while the first "session" was still hanging. After some
time (maybe 10 minutes) the first "session" started to
work.
It seems to me that this network deal is very touchy and
not user friendly at all. I have other problems also
that I will just touch on briefly to give more info.
When I open up My Network Places on my desktop I can see
some of the shared folders on my laptop but not all of
them. And when I group the items by "computer" the
laptop is named appropriately (Business Computer
{Laptop}) but the desktop is named "Unknown". I also
can't see all of the shared folders under the "Unknown"
(Desktop) computer. However, when I go to "View
workgroup computers" I can see the names of both
computers and when I click on either one I can see all of
the shared folders on that computer.
Also, once I can start syncing the transfer rate is very
slow (ave. of 400 kbps). Before I restored both
computers last week (just to clean them up and open up
some space) I would average speeds up to 4 or 5 mbps when
I would sync.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I am spending
literally hours upon hours trying to figure it out with
no real solutions.
