1394 device not identified after updates- "61338 Device Class- Unknown Device" error.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV330, connects via 1394.
Worked fine immediately after a fresh re-install (complete reformatting,
etc..)

But after applying everything relevant from windowsupdate- it now gets a
"61338 Device Class- Unknown Device" error.

the only relevant info found in MS knowledgebases say to turn the camcorder
off and back on again. doesn't work. Sony's site says buy a new cable.
didn't help.

I'm assuming one of the patches did it, but which? can it be un-installed?
if not, is there a work-around, or some other option?

but there's no driver to uninstall/reinstall or update...
(i thought that was the whole point of 1394/firewire/i.link)

and the exact same config works on the exact same machine 2 feet to the
left, which simply doesn't have any of the updates applied to it yet.

Why not just try uninstalling the device and then reinstalling it? Does
that not work?
