RE: 169 IP conflict on wireless!

the 169.254.xxx.xxx addresses are APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing)

This is the default for Windows NT based OS's (vista, XP, etc) for use when no router is present on the network.

Basically, your wireless device is not recieving a DHCP address from whatever you use to serve the addresses. Be it the router or a DHCP Server.

Try ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

You will NOT get a good address if your wifi profile has an incorrect WEP/WPA key.

Did you find anything out on the "web setup" interface of the router? I
you run ipconfig from the computer when it is wired, record the defaul
gateway IP. Then use this in a web browser address bar to see if you ca
connect. (as stated before, the manual says typing http://gigaset wil
also work) I believe the default username and password are available i
the .pdf manual that I posted earlier. If you have done thi
successfully, please post what you found there, if anything, regardin
any kind of online update feature. Also, I know you said you hav
changed the wireless security settings to no avail, but you never sai
if you did this through the web interface or through some kind of setu
software. I can tell you one thing, having dealt with Linksys and man
other brands of wireless routers. Relying on the included managemen
software can be a pain. (even Intel ProSet software is buggy in its ow
ways.) If at all possible, let Windows handle wireless connections o
your laptop, since it has every capability to do so without installe
software. This may mean uninstalling management or configuratio
software if any was shipped on a CD with your modem from your ISP
Anyway, please post in detail about your findings on the web interface
I want to know if you truly have set it up with no wireless securit
before and tried it that way

One other thought related to what Jordus just posted. Vista will hold
some settings on wireless profiles and automatically reconnect using
those same settings. If you have changed security settings on the
router, then let Vista reconnect automatically using old keys, the 169
address is what you will get. Until you choose "disconnect" from the
wifi manager, it will assume the settings are unchanged. After
disconnecting from one of your preferred networks, you will be asked for
a key again on reconnect. It doesn't seem likely that this is the issue,
since other devices have also been unable to connect, but it's worth a
shot if you haven't already "disconnected". (shutting your computer
down, restarting, logging off... none of these things delete profiles
for your preferred wireless connections. Only disconnecting does)

Reset your router to default and reset your wireless security and verify
settings on wireless at same time.

Well hmmm I've logged into the interface quite a few times and to no
avail, can i find anything to suggest an update or to suggest that its
blocking me in any way. I have disconnected and re connected to my
connection about 100 times in the past 3 days. Nothing changes. But
you do think that uninstalling the Intel Proset program might work? And
Diagnosing the problem does absolutely nothing but tell me what I
already know.

have you in fact reset your router to defaults and/or reset your
wireless connection on the router to use no security whatsoever? Also,
when you disconnect and reconnect, does it correctly identify the
wireless network as either open or security enabled?

Yes I have reset it, and no there is no security. It does detect
whether or not there is security on my home network when the security is
either active or dormant

I doubt uninstalling the ProSet software would affect it in any way,
just saying I have seen it become very buggy, especially on past
versions. Since you're not able to connect with other devices, I'd say
incorrect security settings or a hardware or router firmware fault are
the things to look at. You never said... do the lights on the router
indicate tht the WLAN is up and running? When you're supposedly
"connected" with local access only, does this light flash as if it's
being used?

I would recommend starting from scratch. Reset the wireless router and
wireless card to default. Restart the computer and see if the wireless
can see the router without any security enabled. Get it to work with
DHCP properly. Change the channel on both. Test again. Setup your
laptop into the MAC filtering. Use IPConfig/all to get the MAC
address. Then, do one security setting at a time and test each time.

Thanks again for your help
Sorry, the WLan light does turn on when I try to connect, but it does
not flash.
