Tony;
If they are specific Windows XP drivers, they will not work with Windows XP.

I would just wait until you install WinXP. Also, I would recommend doing a
fresh install/upgrade if you can. You'll avoid a lot of troubles that come
along with upgrading from one OS to another.

Some older PCs have video card for which Xp doesn't have drivers.

If yours is one, then prior to the installation / upgrade of Xp, identify
and download the correct drivers. Save them onto a floppy, CD or separate
folder.

When conducting the Xp upgrade direct the system to the location for those
drivers.

If you don't have an appropriate [specif to the display adapter] Xp will
assign a generic driver set: so don't be concerned that you will not have a
working display: it just may not have the full range of screen resolutions or
refresh rates.

Should have been:
"If they are specific Windows 98SE drivers, they will not work with Windows
XP."
Thank you Bruce

Not good advice, especially with Windows XP.

Upgrades to Windows XP have been much more problem free than were
upgrades to earlier versions of Windows, such as upgrading from
Windows 95 to Windows 98 or Windows Me.

I have done several comparisons of an upgrade install versus a clean
install of Windows XP and the only substantive difference I have ever
found is that a clean install is an absolute p.i.t.a. because of the
vast amount of time it takes to reinstall and reconfigure several
dozen application programs and then to restore the user data files
from backups.

And in the (highly unlikely) event that an upgrade install does prove
to be problematic it is always possible to wipe the whole thing out
and do a clean install. But I have never found it necessary to do so.

See MVP Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP:

Run the XP Upgrade Advisor (insert the cd while running 98 and select Other
Tasks) before upgrading and see what will be involved. The system should
run on generic drivers if need be after the installation. You will have an
opportunity to upgrade the drivers once the upgrade is done.
