Access Denied in Profile Folders?

Default Access Denied in Profile Folders?

In XP, I often checked the contents of profile folders (application data,
local settings, temporary internet, etc.) for the existence of spyware and
things I could delete. But when I turn on the option to view hidden files
in Vista, I've found I get "Access Denied" whenever I try to open any of the
folders in the C:\users\MyUserName directory.

Is there anyway to browse these without resetting the security permissions
one by one? Also, why's it locked?

Thanks,
- GeekUnit

Are you looking at stuff that starts with "My ___" like in XP?
if so, those aren't folders, they're called "junctions" and they are there
to redirect stuff from where it was located XP to the new folders in Vista.
I've got hidden files shown, and no problems accessing appdata, temp etc.

Thanks! I just finally saw your post in Vista.Security. Interesting stuff.
For example, Temporary Internet files is now stored in:
C:\Users\Whoever\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\T emporary Internet Files
So bizarre.

No problem,
there's also a command line way to show where everything that was in XP gets
directed to in Vista,
but can't remember it.
If you look close, those "junctions folders"are semitransparent; and have
shortcut arrows on em.
not folders at all. hmmm
confused me at first too.

If you ever see posts from "Jimmy B", he's pretty much da MAN about this
stuff,(other than MSFT people themselves).

:-)

Hello,

The command line:

dir /al

Will just show junctions (or symlinks) in the current directory. Or, a
simple dir /a will work.
