access to printer preferences/properties

I am unable to access either printer properties or
preferences. Using canon i550, but same problem with
Canon 6000 and HP deskjet 692C. Printer works fine with
text, but color is unacceptable when printing photos. I
have downloaded and installed the lastest printer driver,
and have also downloaded and installed all Windows XP
updates. NOTE - above features are accessable if printer
is connected to another computer running Windows 98.

Have been on line with HP help for over 14 hours and they
are unable to help.
