No--they are just enforcing the 1 copy for 1 pc license you have been
violating in the past by installing the software on all your computers.

Jay;
One license, one computer.
The same as it has always been with ALL consumer Microsoft OSs.

"why should i pay $200 a pop for software to put on each different PC
in my house?"
How many automobiles do you have?
Do you tell the dealer you should not have to pay for the second since
you only drive one at a time?

This came about largely because people would buy one copy and install
it on multiple computers.
Since most do not read the EULA, they did not even know they were
pirating.
WPA is a means to control piracy, casual and otherwise.

You say "to install it on a fixed number of PC's" It is...fixed to
one.
You do not have to spend any money.
Why upgrade all computers?
Why upgrade any computers?
You need to buy a license for each computer you choose to upgrade.

If you upgrade or format the computer, you do not need to buy another
copy.
Did some one tell you that myth?
Worst case would be a 5 minute toll free call to Microsoft.

They sell you a retail version on the web, then when you get the
product it turns out to be a oem version. I know this happen to alot

of people. And they couldn't get thier money back or the retail
version of the os.

Greetings --

What planet are you from? Does your local grocer let you walk out
of the market with four loaves of bread when you've paid for only one?
Can you drive four cars home if you've paid for only one? Does your
local clothier allow you to leave the shop with four shirts if you've
purchased only one? Have you noticed a trend, yet? Where in the
world did you ever get the absurd idea that software manufacturers
would sell their products any differently?

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and copyright
laws, if not technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each
computer on which it is installed. The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) the sort of multiple installations you're asking about.

WPA does not prevent you from reinstalling on the same machine,
should it ever be necessary.

No one "expects" you to buy WinXp for every machine in the house.
If you want every computer to run the same operating system, that's
_your_ choice.

It's thieves like you who have made it necessary for Microsoft and
other software manufacturers to implement copy protection mechanisms
like Product Activation. You have no one to blame but yourself, and
others of your ilk.

Have you guys ever heard of buy one get one free?

Also, Anyone here heard about Networking the computers together?

This way one computer can have xp on it and the others can have
different os on it. Then, all the computers can access each other.
And It is legal and not against Microsoft Eula.

Greetings --

Heard of? Sure. Believed? Not since I was very young and naive.
;-}

"Buy one, get one free" sales offers have been nothing but sucker
bait from time immemorial. No merchant is going to make such an offer
unless the price of the single item has been "adjusted" to cover the
cost of the second, purportedly "free" item.

TNSTAAFL, for cryin' out loud, people!

Quite right. There's nothing that says the OP *has* to upgrade

You got that much right.

That is exactly what you do get, and what you have always gotten with
Windows.

A license for a fixed number of computers.

And that number is fixed at 1. Always has been for Microsoft
operating systems.
