You should have no problem doing a telephone activation.

Just explain that you have been reconfiguring and reformatting the
hard drives in the computer without going into extensive details.

And if they give you any static about "too many activations" then ask
to speak to a supervisor.

Good luck

You may install/reinstall Windows XP as many times as you wish,
as long as the installation takes place on the same computer.
Each time you'll be requested to activate XP in the same manner as
you did originally, usually via the internet. If Product Activation
via the internet is not successful, then simply select the option to
"activate by telephone".

In order to overcome computer downtime in the event of a
computer failure or theft, we are thinking of purchasing
Nortons Ghost 2002 to create a clone image of our hard
drive. My question is - will we have to reactivate all
our different software that had to be activated initially
eg XP & Office?

During activation, XP sends a "fingerprint" of your
machines hardware. If you reinstall XP with the same
hardware and it matches then the activation is automatic.

If you want prevent a little activation headache, make a
backup copy of wpa.dbl It contains the hardware
fingerprint info. Then if you need to reinstall xp on a
system that's already been activated, you can restore
this file and bypass the need for activation. It's also
a life saver if xp refuses to run thinking you've changed
something and not activated previously. Xp creates a
backup of the wpa.dbl file called wpa.bak that you can
rename while in safe mode.

Maybe all that will answer your question.

Use the phone activation. You WILL have to uninstall XP from the wrong PC. The
activation tech will require you to do that.

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

this time when I try to activate xp it says that my key
has been used too many times and I have to type in a
different one.
