adaptive answer

Posted: 10-29-2003, 04:32 PM
I am running the Microsoft Fax Service and Incoming
Connection (RAS) in Windows XP. I am trying to get
adaptive answer to work. Please note, I am NOT referring
to distinctive ring.

This article
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?
url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/proddocs/howto_conn_incom
ing.asp implies that adaptive answer is supported by XP.
The suggestion in that article is "your modem may not
support adaptive answer"

However I have confirmed that my modem (Conexant Smart
HSFi V92 supplied by Dell) does support adaptive answer
and is indeed able to discriminate between data and fax
calls. I have tested it in Hyperterminal. I issue
AT+FAE=1, (the command for my modem to activate adaptive
answer) and then wait for an incoming call. Once the call
is answered, the modem reports "DATA" or "FAX". I have
also tried using a different modem.

This worked flawlessly in Windows 2000.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I forgot to mention, when Microsoft Fax is enabled, the
computer accepts only fax calls. I have added the +FAE=1
to the modem strings. When Fax is disabled, the incoming
connection functions properly.
Thank you again.

Adaptive answering is not available in XP but is available in Windows Server
2003.

Thanks for your quick response. Wouldn't it be helpful to
others if you corrected that technet page?
Thank you,
Taylor
