What happens when you try to run add printer wizard? The
print spooler service might be stopped or disabled, go
start, adminstrative tools(also found in control panel)
services, and down at print spooler set startup type to
automatic. if you wish to reply, please email me.

When I click on the add a printer wizard in Windows XP
Pro nothing happens. I have restarted the PC several
times. I am trying to add a Brother DCP-1400. I have also
tried to inststall from the Brother setup CD and it gives
an error "cannot copy file". I am also logged in as
Administrator. Any hekp would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Is the print spooler running? From the command prompt, type

net start spooler

(and hit enter).

Then try the Add Printer Wizard again.

add printer wizard
Posted: 10-31-2003, 01:56 PM
I have loaded XP Pro on a few machines that when I finish
loading everything the printer wizard does not work. It
does nothing at all. I cannot tell when it is going to
stop working. I have loaded the os and updates and it
still worked, I loaded all other programs and somewhere in
that time it stopped working. It does not break all the
time, just 50% on fresh loads. Once it stopped on a
factory load. The only fix is reloading so far.

Thanks for any help,
Conny

Highly interesting. Can you be more specific - how exactly does it stop
working ? Does it not come and do nothing, not came up but display error
message, come up but fail somewhere along the way ?

What other apps are in the image you're deploying ?

I have the same problem. The Add a Printer does nothing,
no error, no response.

[This manifest itself such that I cannot use the sw
supplied by two printer vendors to install the printers.
Just after I connect the printer, both install apps go
nuts (1) CPU 100% and 1) install gets itself into a
endless loop which I have to break out of). My printer
use to work]

Well, if Conny's problem is indeed that double-clicking the Add Printer icon
results in nothing, then you have the same sympton. Hers is really
interesting because it's not consistent. Yours is probably the usual case of
some install program futzing around with printui.dll (which hosts the Add
Printer Wizard). Running "sfc /scannow" from the command line usually fixes
that.

My problem is that nothing happens with the add printer
wizard. No errors no nothing. I am so frustrated and sorry
about this but I am glad to know that one other person has
run into this. I am to the point of being afraid to load
XP fresh on a machine.

So, assuming that you're deploying images - what application do you install
with that ?

Does running sfc /scannow from the command line on one of the affected
machines solve the problem ? If so, what does the log say which files got
replaced ?

No I am not using an image I am loading fresh xp. I am
loading Jenzabar (DataBase SQL2k), adobe reader, netscape,
pegasus email, winzip. I have not gotten another computer
with this problem to try SFC yet. I ended up putting
windows 2000 on the two I had from the other day because
the users were waiting.
Thanks,
Conny
