Add Printer Wizard doesn't work

I connect a local printer (HP Deskjet) and XP Home
autodetects it but at the end of the install it says there
was a problem and the printer may not work properly
(something about a module). Printing from the internet
actually works, but printing from Outlook and other
programs doesn't work. The printer isn't listed in the
Printers & Faxes and double clicking on "Add Printers"
does nothing. The print spooler service is started.
Compaq recommended a system restore, but I would like to
avoid that.

Add printer wizard doesn't work

When I try to add a printer, I get an error message saying
that the operation cannot be completed. When I go into
services and try to start the print spooler, I get an 1068
error message. How can I fix this?
