Adding a hard drive

Posted: 10-19-2003, 05:21 PM
I need to connect the hard drive from my old computer to
my new computer. The old hard drive is a maxtor 91020D6
from a 1998 gateway and the new computer is a new gateway.
Everytime I connect the old hard drive my system locks up.
I have the maxtor set as a slave.

What am I doing wrong?

Your new computer alomst certainly has the drive set to cable select
(referred to as CSD), i.e the master/slace status is determined by which
connector on the IDE cable is plugged into the drive. If you try to mix a
drive defined as primary or secondary on the same cable as a drive with CSD
enabled, it will lock the IDE bus. The answer is to re-jumper the old drive
to CSD (take a look at the jumpers on the back of the drive) or to rejumper
the new driver to primary rather than CSD.
