| I added a password to the administators account on windows XP. I wrote down my password and double checked and it worked okay. Administator account showed up on start up screen. Now the administrator account won't accept my password and and does not show up on my start up screen. What happened and can I fix this without formatting and starting over? | Guest

| Roland; Did the Administrator account disappear after you created a new account? That is normal. Reboot, tapping F8 each second. Choose Safe Mode at the menu. Select Administrator If you want to copy the data from Administrator to other account: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811151 If the password does not work: The password is Case Sensitive. Check Caps Lock and try various of Capital combinations. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321305 Or Reboot to Safe Mode, select Administrator, leave password blank. Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel. Select the user and change the password. If you are using Windows XP Pro and have encrypted data, you may permanently lose access to the encrypted data. Here are other options: http://www.wininternals.com/products...very/index.asp http://www.sunbelt-software.com/prod...&affid=wxpnews Another option is to install Windows XP on another partition and take Ownership of your data. You could also perform another installation on the same partition, although this is not a permanent fix and it is recommended to perform a Clean Installation after retrieving your data. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] An easier way to read newsgroup messages: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...oups/setup.asp Please respond to newsgroup only for everyone's benefit. | When adding a new user account and changing it from administrator to limited, somehow the administrator account was deleted. Now there is no recognized administrator and so no changes can be made to the computer. Internet access is not possible because the only user recognized by the computer is limited and a guest of the administrator and does not have a subscription to msn, the isp for the computer. Is there a way to restore the administrator or to assign a new one? Thank you for your time and consideration. | Guest

| Yes, there is a built in Administrator account. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the welcome screen, with no users logged on. This gets you the old Win2K style login. Enter Administrator and whatever password, if any, is assigned to this account. To enable the Administrator account on the new Windows XP logon screen, visit my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to the Windows XP section. Follow the link for Enable Administrator Account ...... This small VB Script will make the registry change necessary for the Administrator account to be available on the Welcome Screen. If you prefer to do it manually, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserLis t\ Note: There is a space between Windows and NT in the above Key. Add the Administrator account if necessary and/or change the Administrator value to 1 -- Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows XP/ Windows Smart Display Win 95/98/Me/XP Tweaks and Fixes http://www.dougknox.com -------------------------------- Associate Expert ExpertZone - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone -------------------------------- Please reply only to the newsgroup so all may benefit. | The only difference I know of, and I'm actually not 100% certain, is that the Administrator account may have some direct access to some "protected" folders that might normally need a "take ownership" action. -- Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows XP/ Windows Smart Display Win 95/98/Me/XP Tweaks and Fixes http://www.dougknox.com -------------------------------- Associate Expert ExpertZone - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone -------------------------------- Please reply only to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
