After upgrading to SP1 I can't log on my user account.

I upgraded to SP1 yesterday, via Windows Update. Did my laptop first,
everything worked fine, no errors and both user accounts can log in just fine.

On my desktop computer I did the same, SP1 got installed without any
problems at all. After the mandatory reboot I tried logging in to the only
useraccount and got a message saying "Welcome", then it immediately switches
to "Logging off..." then dumps me right back at the login screen.

Tried Last Known Good Configuration, didn't work.
Got in with Safe Mode and created another account. That account works fine
and I can log in again. However, It's a hassle to move over all files, set
everything up the way I like it and so I'd really like to get my primary
login working again.

Checked the settings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

My old account has the same settings as the new one. Both are "active"
(checked with net user <username>).

Any ideas?

Hello Alpha,
Just a crazy thought. Logon to an admin acct.,change your user acct in
question to admin acct. Can you login now without getting "dumped" again
?

My account had administrator rights already. Tried setting it to standard,
same result, tried going back to administrator, still the same.

Hey there Alpha,

Sounds like the profile may possibly be corrupted.

What you can do is first backup the corrupted profile (you don't want to
lose stuff like music and documents) and then delete it.

Backup the corrupted profile:

Log into safe mode and create a new Administrator account.
Log out of the machine and then back in with the new Administrator account.
Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings.
Click Settings button under the User Profiles section.
Click and highlight the profile you want to copy.
Click Copy to and type in or browse for the directory you want to copy it
to. (I usually just create a folder called Backup)
Click the Permitted to use button and add all user accounts that you want to
give
full control of the profile to (Including the account that you're having the
problem with.)
Click Ok.

To delete the corrupted profile, just highlight it and click Delete in the
User Settings window after you're done.

Log back in to your original account, and then copy over all your desktop
stuff, music, documents, blah blah blah.

I already tried other ways. First thought was to simply uninstall SP1 and
see what happened. I did so using System Restore. All went fine in the first
part of the process, but after the reboot I got a message saying that the
system restore process failed and that SP1 was not uninstalled. Clicked ok
and tried to login my account, and voilÃ*, it worked! Did a ver in cmd, and it
said I have "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]" so SP1 is still there.
Still don't know what the hickup was, but glad it's gone. Too bad we didn't
get to the bottom of it though.
