I have a Asus P5B motherboard and Vista Home premium. Here is what I did to
go from IDE to AHCI.

Shutdown the computer.

Removed SATA cable from the Intel 82801HR SATA AHCI Controller and plugged
in the SATA port of the J-Micron.

Booted computer after changing BIOS to reflect the change above. Also in
this step I did configure the BIOS for AHCI for the Intel controller.

The PC booted properly. I installed the driver for the AHCI. I got the
driver from Intel. The driver installed properly even if I do not have a
drive connected to the interface.

Shutdown the computer.

Move back the SATA cable to the Intel controller.

Power up, change BIOS to reflect change in boot drive location.

Note: I have two drive. For these steps I only connected one. I did a backup
before these steps just in case. I did not need the backup. Everything did
work fine.

Thanks for the effort. I'm trying to avoid reisntalling Vista, but still
having a stable system a]fter moving over from IDE to AHCI. I have the
drivers on a thumb drive and am wondering if I put the drivers in
windows/win32/drivers, if when I boot the system will find them. Or, do I
have to install them. Worst case basis, I'll reinstall, which might
ultimately be the best choice.

(I'm a different Don, just to make things confusing.) I don't know
about the particular drivers you have, but if the system is working
now you should be able to use the driver update mechanism in Device
Manager. You can direct the updater to your USB stick and Vista
should take it from there, assuming that the drivers are compatible.

Thanks for the help. I didn't have the option of switching to a J-Micron
port, so I bit the bullet after screwing around with a lot of different
options and did the reinstall. Huge difference in performance. RAID/AHCI
is the way to go with a SATA drive, no question.

Bios setting should be set on IDE mode before attempting this.

You can install the Miscrosoft standard AHCI driver from within Vista
throught Device Manager. In Device Manager select you IDE/Sata cotroller
and properties and selected updriver. The select browse my computer for
driver software. Select let me pict from list. In the screen untick the
box "show compatible hardward". Scroll dowwn under the Manufactuer
column and select the Standard AHCHI driver and select next. This should
the Microsoft AHCI driver. Reboot. Then go into the bios and change your
IDE configuration to AHCI. Once your reboot you can then install the
AHCI driver for your particular motherboard.

Many thanks to James for this work around. Like Don, I installed a SATA HDD
under IDE but was loath to reinstall Vista. This suggestion worked like a
charm with my Intel D975XBX2 MOBO and Seagate HDD.

Footnote: Unintended consequences

While James' suggestions has my HDD spinning away as AHCI, I also had to
reactivate Vista. Evidently it mistook this for a hard drive replacement!
And I thought Vista was supposed to be less picky than XP . . .
