Alternate "Recorded TV" source

Posted: 11-21-2006, 04:37 AM
I want to make Media Center (in Vista) to use a different directory than
C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV. How do I do this? I do NOT want to use the
"Videos" option in Media Center, I want the "Recorded TV" to point to the
Recorded TV directory of my XP MCE server on my high-speed LAN with meta
info and all.

I have already scoured RegEdit.exe for C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV. No
change in there makes Media Center point to my desired location.

I'm not sure why it won't let you save recorded tv where you want it to be
saved

However I can tell you I have MCE 2005 on my other partition and I save my
recorded tv from both to a seperate Hdd and for some strange reason Vista's
media center doesn't like playing tv shows that I have recorded in MCE 2005
they play very rough and choppy in MCE 2005 but play well in vista's media
center

Easy fix Jon,

Open up Media Center and go to settings.
Scroll to "Tasks"
Click on "settings"
when in settings, click on "TV"
When in TV, click on "Recorder"
The first option will be "Recorder Storage"
On the first line you will see "Record on drive"
Choose which evewr drive you would like to record to. Note: Windows will
automatically set up a folder called "Recorded TV" on that drive.
This folder will not show up until something is recorded, so after you click
save, go back to "Live TV" and record a couple minutes of what ever you want
to.
Media Center should automatically add that folder to your folder watch list,
but if it doesn't, go back to Tasks > Settings > TV > Recorder > More TV
Locations, and add that folder to your "Watched Folders"

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks, except I don't have a TV tuner. Vista shows a "Recorded TV" thing
even without a tuner card. The "TV" -> "Recorder" settings are not available
to me without the tuner card. Yet Media Center is still storing at
"C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV" .. tell me that path isn't hard-coded..

Well Jon, the only other option I can give you is under pictures and videos,
you can add a network folder into your video folder with Media center.
If you don't have a TV tuner connected to Media center, you will not be able
to access anything but the pre-selected Recorded TV folder. However, you
should be able to access and view your recorded videos in the Pictures and
Videos option.

Sorry I couldn;'t be more help

That sucks. All Microsoft needed to do was make this thing use and expose a
registry look-up. They should have otherwise hidden the Recorded TV option
if there was no tuner.
