An upgrade from WinXP 32 to Vista 64 bit?

Posted: 02-27-2007, 11:36 PM
Greetings,

Is it possible to upgrade fro Wiindows XP 32 bit to Vista 64 bit? In other
words I have a system with WinXP 32 and want to buy a retail upgrade to go
to Vista 64. Will the upgrade allow me to do this?

Thank you in advance,

iam

XP x64 MUST be installed "clean".
Vista x64 must ALSO be installed "clean"

At least as far as I know.
I may be wrong.
If that's the case, please forgive me for not properly informing myself.

You will be doing a clean install of Vista x64. The upgrade option will be
grayed out since you're installing the 64 bit version. You should consider
doing a dual-boot configuration and keep WinXP as the main OS until you're
satisfied that x64 meets your expectations and that all your software will
run and that there are drivers for your hardware.

You can always ditch x64 at any time and load up the 32 bit version (x86) -
it won't take you long to make that decision so I wouldn't activate Vista
until you've had a chance to kick the tires and take it for a test drive.
But if you do activate it and want to change - no problem, you just have to
do a telephone activation.

Been lots of posts on dual-boot configuration so do some reading here or a
search.

Yes, you are eligible for an upgrade edition of Vista, but going from a 32
bit to a 64 bit operating system requires a clean install.

Jane, not plain 64 bit enabled :-)
Batteries not included. Braincell on vacation ;-)

Nope. 64Bit Vista has to be a clean install.

There are two components here. Yes, you can use an upgrade product key to
go from x86 XP to x64 Vista, however, it can only be done by a clean
install. XP must be installed, start the upgrade by booting the x64 DVD, it
will see x86 XP is there as a qualifying OS, and then allow you to do a
clean install. The XP installation will be wrapped up in the windows.old
folder, and can be deleted. Neither data nor programs are migrated.
