ANN: XPE and VMware.

Posted: 12-21-2003, 06:13 PM
Hi,

I don't know if this is of any interest to any on this list. I just uploaded
a page to my website detailing how one can use VMware Workstation during
development of Windows XP Embedded images.
The page is located here:

Have a nice christmas!

Kind regards,
Brian

Thanks for the info Brian. Can you tell me what the time savings is between
the traditional method of deployment (for you it was about 20 minutes)and
using a virtual image for the experiments?

Good work!

Hi Andy,

It is hard to measure an exact time saving. Time is only one benifit of
this "solution".
You don't save any time creating and building the resulting configuration.
FBA may take longer depending on the difference between your development
machine and your target machine.
OTOH, you have direct access to the resulting image. F.ex. I have to install
the .NET framework and a custom application written in C# to my target
configuration. For some reason the application won't start - it is missing
"something". So I copy over dependency walker and run my application from
dependency walker. It will tell me which dll's are missing. I can copy
those over until it works.
When all that is done, I need to add the primitives I copied over to my
design in TD.
Doing this the traditional way I would have had to guess/rebuild a lot. Which
would lead to a loss of time. (In my case: 20-30 minutes pr. rebuild).

Kind regards,
Brian
