(Another) File Deletion problem under XP

Posted: 07-06-2003, 11:05 AM
Hi,

Earlier this year, I purchased a new PC pre-installed
with Windows XP Home Edition V5.1. Early on, I had to
restore my original software configuration using the
Restore CD provided with the original PC.

This was entirely successful. When I inspected the
contents of the hard disk I noticed that 'Restore' had
copied the entire old image to a folder entitled:

c:\my old disk structure -- 03-05-10 0744pm\

After I had recovered the user data from this image, I
decided to delete the contents of this folder to save HDD
space. This was OK, except for one folder which was the
user area for my son

c:\my old disk structure -- 03-05-10
0744pm\documents and settings\john\...

I found access to this was denied. At this point I should
inform you that my son had passworded his XP user account
at one point, though he subsequently un-passworded it
before we restored the factory disk image.

I managed (in DOS mode)by changing the Access Control
Lists (ACL)to get one level lower and could see this had
sub-folders of: desktop, my documents favourites etc,
however I could not get into these folders.

I went into 'DOS' mode and tried to use RMDIR OR RD to
remove the sub-folders. This was refused with the
message "Access denied".

I tried to use ATTRIB command to modify the READ ONLY by
specifying -R, however, this was refused with the
message "Access denied".

I tried checking/modifying the Access Control Lists for
these folders using the CACLS command, however again this
was refused with the message "Access is denied".

Is there anything else I can do? I can't believe that I
will be stuck with these redundant folders that cannot be
accessed forever??

Many thanks in anticipation for your help.

Tried your suggestion of Tweak UI, but am struggling to
see how this helps..
Perhaps I've missed something - can you be more explicit?
Thx in anticipation
