Anyone experiencing conflict between October 2008 MS Security Bulletin patches with TPM and Embassy Trust Suite?

Posted: 10-17-2008, 08:38 PM
I have scheduled a callback from Dell due to an issue I experienced
today with Vista Ultimate SP1 and the Embassy Trust Suite. I am unable to
log on at all using the biometric fingerprint reader in my Latitude D820
(A09 BIOS), and unable to log in with ALL KNOWN VALID usernames/password
pairs using internal keyboard, external USB keyboard or Remote Desktop
(remote connections to IPC$ and file shares DO work with known good
accounts). After 1 attempt to log on, password is rejected and LSASS.EXE
causes system to reboot ~ 40 - 120 seconds later. Only system changes are
daily antivirus definitions and the application of all applicable October
2008 MS Security Bulletins.
Temporary work around is to boot into safe mode, disable Embassy Suite
GINA per their article "Changing the default Gina from Wave Gina to
Microsoft's Gina" at http://www.wave.com/support/Documents/esc/esc-011.asp.
That allowed logon, but system now hung after desktop displayed,
functionality restored by setting these three services from automatic to
manual: "NTRU TSS v1.2.1.25 TCS", "Wave UCSPlus", "TPM Base Services".
Microsoft CSS has not been contacted yet, except for this initial posting
and Problem Reports and Solutions submitted via Control Panel (which is
anonymous). I am using latest drivers for Embassy Trust Suite, current AV
and hard drive chkdsk is normal.

Hello,

Firstly, I would say that, based on my research, I didn't find any relevant
issues or bugs.

I would like to suggest that you contact Dell to efficiently resolve the
problem. Please understand that I don't intend to bounce you between
different support services as I am fully aware how time consuming this can
be. However, as we have little knowledge on these applications and models,
and are not quite aware how they changed the logon process, we may not be
the best resource for this particular problem.

You can contact Dell to obtain the latest drivers or latest updates for the
Embassy Trust Suite to see if the problems remains. This is because if the
safe mode can work, in most cases, it means that the particular device
driver or components are corrupted.

You can also try working with Dell to restore the system or try to recovery
it, in case the system may be damaged by incorrect operations.

Thank you for your understanding and I hope this will be resolved soon.

Sincerely,
George Yin

Dell has failed to follow up, and I am running the latest drivers from
Embassy Trust Suite per Dell's website. I am wondering if MS08-061 KB954211
might be the root cause, assuming lsass.exe and win32k.sys are interacting
with each other causing this driver conflict.

Hello,

Would you please do some more tests to help narrow down the cause?

You can try the Clean Boot to see if the problem remains:

1. Click Start, Run, and type "msconfig" and click OK.

2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

3. Clear the boxes for the items that follow.

Load startup items

4. On the Services tab, put a check mark in the Hide All Microsoft Services
box.

5. Now click on the Disable All button.

6. Click OK.

7. Click Yes to restart your computer.

If the problem disappears after the Clean Boot, You can then check all the
items listed on the Startup tab and the Services tab one-by-one, to see
which caused the problem.

Once you find the relevant application (may probably be the Embassy
application), please try uninstalling and reinstalling it. If the same
problem re-occurs after doing this, please let me know the exact
information of the application. Or you can directly contact our CSS to see
if it is a compatibility bug.

Please work with Dell to uninstall the relevant application to avoid more
potential problems. You may also try uninstalling and reinstalling the
device driver to see how it goes.

Sincerely,
George Yin

Downloading the above driver worked for me.
I've got Vista Business and Dell Latitude 830
