Anyone get Officejet G85xi to work with XP

I just bought a new HP pavillion with XP Media Center Edition.
I am trying to get my G85 printer installed properly(parallel
cable). The latest install executable for XP was downloaded
and installed successfully.

Here's the problem. If the PC is booted everything comes up
and works okay. If I power on the printer the icon in the
system tray changes state indicating that the printer is
ready. I can print,scan etc. okay. If I power the printer off
the icon still indicates ready and does not change. Power the
printer back on and nothing works.

Any help on how to keep the software stable would be most
appreciated. I have worked with HP on this to no avail.
