Apple Laserwriter printer

Posted: 02-12-2007, 05:20 PM
I have an Apple Laserwriter II printer that I am trying to install on my pc
which had Home Xp.
There are two Laserwriter II, one if IIf and the other IIg. I installed
both (one at the time), but to no avail. There is no "connection" between
the pc and the printer via the serial port. I am totally at loss with this.
The serial port LPT1 is working properly and the printer indicates the same.

I do not have the orginal drivers for this printer.

any help/hint would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Denys

You need the right serial cable for this device. The 25 pin connector on
the back of the printer is for an external scsi drive.

For the serial connection to work both the printer and the com port need to
be configured for the same handshake mode as well as baudrate and stop bits.

Thanks Alan for the information. Would you know what kind of cable I really
need? I am totally at lost with this.

Thanks
Denys

We don't have this printer around any longer (not many people do).

I think the serial connector on the back of the printer is 25 pin (unsure on
gender). If the printer only has the 8pin round serial connector for the
MAC, good luck finding a 9pin to 8pin din converter.

I don't suppose you have the manual.

info from Apple
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30154

this would be the cable pinouts.

Serial Cable With Apple Laserwriter

DB-9(computer) DB-25(Apple LaserWriter)

RXD 2--------------------2 TXD

TXD 3--------------------3 RXD

GND 5--------------------1 GND & 7 GND

DSR 6 & CTS 8------------20 DTR

RTS 7--------------------5 CTS & 6 DSR

I have a similar question, and thought I'd post it here in case it would help
Denys:

I have an Apple Personal LaserWriter NTR which I was hoping to breathe new
life into with my laptop running XP Pro. I have a RS232C (DB25) connector on
the back of the LaserWriter and a RS232 (DB9) connection on my Dell Latitude
D810. I used a standard Belkin DB25 to DB9 cable. I loaded the native APLW
NTR driver that is in Windows XP when I tried to add the printer, and set it
to COM1 to use the serial port. The computer says the print job completed
(or rather, doesn't give me any error message!) yet the printer sits idle.

Any ideas or experience with this would be appreciated!

Yes. The two devices need to be configured with the same handshake.
