you might want to try blowing some canned air in to the fan and see what
that does for you, might be a lot of dust in there. IF that doesn't work you
might want to invest in a new fan because it sounds like it might be on its
way out.

I tried blowing a can of air, it just made
It noisier.

Yes I am going to buy a power supply and a cpu fan.

I just don’t want to waste money and
Get fans that sound the same or are louder.

How fast should you power supply fan go? (In rpm please).

It could be running too fast. Note, My computer just has two fans,
Cpu and power supply fan.

Should I order the power supply from the manufacturer or
Should I let the computer shop get what I want?

In short, no--not all power supply fans are noisy. I've
got a power supply with 2 fans, 4 case fans, plus a CPU
fan...while it makes some noise, it's nothing too
obnoxious-just a quiet purr. On the other hand, we've got
some Compaq servers at work that would drown out an old DC-
3 on a take off roll!!

Some of the better power supplies have variable speed fans
that go faster as the machine gets warmer. As long as
things are nice and cool, they run slow...which means much
quieter. If things get hot, however, it may sound like
you're on the flight line of a Navy carrier ship...don't
be surprised if you get a call from the FAA wondering if
you're lined up for take-off! :-)

Additionally, my Antec power supply even has a few
special "fan" plugs that will drive up to 2 case fans,
running them at slower speeds if the temperature inside is
cool enough.

Also, better fans should run more quietly. Air movement
noise is part of the problem (fan style/design along with
obstructions to the air flow make a difference here), but
crummy bearings and other internal parts can make noise
too. This is particularly true for old fans that are
about to die.

On a related note, many of the newer motherboards have
plugs that support speed monitoring (for the CPU and for
the case) if you have a fan that supports it. This is a
good way to know when a fan goes out (if you're running
the hardware monitor program [e.g., ASUSProbe], it will
scream if the fan slows down too much).

Finally, don't discount hard drive noise. Some of those
puppies can really scream. Better hard drives can be MUCH
quieter than others. If a hard drive starts making more
noise then normal [suddenly or gradually over time], back
up your data and get a new hard drive, since that often
means a bearing is going out--and the hard drive will
probably die shortly thereafter.

There are also certain PSUs that have a large 12cm fan on the bottom of the
unit blowing in instead of on the back blowing out. As the fan has a much
larger area than an 8cm fan it can turn slower and still displace the same
amount of air, in short it'll produce significantly less noise, you might
want to check if you can get any PSU like that. But yes one of the major
factors of noise in the long run is poor build quality, cheaper fans will
have cheaper bearings and will likely be giving more noise sooner in it's
life time than a decent quality fan.

Lots of power and is quiet. There is a speed adjuster knob on the back
to increase/decrease the speed of the second (back) fan. With the
speed at maximum, I can hear the PSU but I only use it that way when
gaming.
