Audio but no Picture with .AVI in WMP

Posted: 07-17-2005, 09:16 PM
I need to be able to view .avi made in a mini-dv video camcorder. Aim is to
edit in Moviemaker and Powerdirector and view in WMP.
Unfortunately the .avi files will only play sound in all these applications,
but appears to work fine in Quicktime. The files played on my old PC.
Reading similar posts I just installed Divx player but this said the file
contains "Fourcc code mjpg" and refused to play.
Any help much appreciated.

You need to obtain a MJEPG codec.

Might want to google that and decide which MJPEG codec to try out.

How are you capturing the movie from the camcorder to the pc? If you use
firewire it should capture as dv-avi.

Hi Graham the camera is very basic and stores video on an SD card. My son
uses it to make videos of his bmx stunts and is giving me grief as he cannot
make films for his mates.
Appreciate your helping me out.

The key here is that the decoder "MJPG" is mentioned, which is the decoder
Motion JPEG.
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#mjpeg
should probably help you fix this problem up, then. =)

Thanks Zach I'll have a read of the page tomorrow. One thought though....from
my browsing earlier this evening; if Directx includes a mjpg codec why am I
required to seek out a third party codec?
Thanks Ian

You normally would not be, but I'm assuming that a 3rd party MJPEG decoder
has stomped over the top of the Microsoft one. This isn't unheard of - it's
one drawback of letting people plug into your decoding scheme. =\
