Audio mix problems

IMing or visit a site with music or something, that sound
still comes through too. It gets annoying. is there a
way to make it that once i start rioport (my music
player) to mute all other sounds so it will only play my
music and then when i close it it comes up with other
sounds again. It worked on ym old comp that had windows
98. please help
