auto play

Posted: 11-08-2003, 01:10 AM
Is there a way to stop XP from opening a blank cd
automatically? I have changed all the auto play options
to "take no action", but the cd contents window pops up
every time I place a cd into the drive. This is a minor
annoyance, and I can still work around the problem with
programs that crash when cd's auto play, but it would be
nice to just be able to tell the computer to not auto
play a blank cd.

Thanks for any info.

Go into "My Computer"
Right click on the CD Drive and select Properties

Select Auto Play Tab and click on first bar and on drop-
down, select Blank CD.
Under Actions click on "Select an action" then click
on "Take no action"

Click on Apply then OK and that should eliminate the
problem.

Click on Take no action and then apply.

Hello. Thanks for the reply. Checking "take no action"
had no effect. I checked "take no action" for all the
auto play options, but whatever kind of cd I put in the
drive, auto play operates. I can't get the sucker to quit
auto play.

Regards.

Press and hold shift while closing the tray with the CD. Don't release
Shift until the initial blinking of the drive finishes.

Or install TweakUI for XP and disable autoplay on a per drive basis.
TweakUI is one of the Power toys for XP. This version is *only* for XP with
SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp

If you do not have SP1, the earlier version can be found at:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ertoySetup.exe

Open the Regedit, and fin the Key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\CDRom]
find the subkey Autorun, double click on and put "0" to disable or "1" to
enable the autorun functin on CD-Rom.

I am unsure as to what you mean by checking "take no
action" for ALL of the autoplay options.

You must do them one-by-one and then reboot after every
change you have made (Microsoft is somewhat vague in
explaining this).

When you reboot, the registry will log the changes.

Having just tested the fact that I shut down; re-powered;
connected a Walkman to the Input port; placed a Blank CD
in the drive and did not get that screen that expects you
to take action, I must assume that you have done
something incorrect.

Perhaps you have some other audio/video software that has
eliminated one of the files that are essential.

Try it again...But do not eliminate or restore everything
at once. Reboot every time you make a change to that
screen.

Hope this Info helps you to get back on track.

Thank you Sharon. Holding the shift key works splendidly,
and it is very simple.

You're welcome, Seth. Glad to have helped. The XP autoplay screens can be
very helpful at times but I enjoy skipping them when I don't need them too.

Re: how to disable Auto Play in Windows XP?

Go to

Scroll down this page A to Auto Play...
There are several guidelines listed for your choice.
