Automatic login doesn't work :-(

Posted: 12-05-2006, 10:45 AM
Hello!

It's my first post to this newsgroup, so I say hello to everybody ;-)

I've installed Mandriva 2007 several days ago and I'm trying to get
accustomed to ;-)

Ad rem: the autologin feature doesn't work for me. I think that I did
proper configuration (as I can read from manuals). Relevant window in my
Control center looks like this (sorry for polish language):

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/472/aaakz0.png

And KDE settings are:

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/7071/bbbdl9.png

Apart from this every time I turn my PC on I get blue screen with login
and password :-(

Password for user 'gonsiorek' is empty - maybe that's an issue?

I've tried to find files with some relevant configuration. I've found
something like 'kderc' in /etc/kdm/<some_other_path>/

Here it goes (maybe it will be useful):

No, user 'gonsiorek' has no password. When I come back home I'll try to
assign him one (I'm at work now), maybe it'll help...

Thanks for your response, anyway.

Run draksec (from a konsole as root). Either set the security level
standard under basic options (second lowest level under the first tab),
or use the third tab, System Options, and change the 6th entry, Autologin
from Default to Yes.

You may need to unselect/reselect the allowing of autologin, via the
mandriva control center, and the kde control center.

Thanks for your advice. I run draksec and set it in this way:

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/1797/draksec1ya8.png

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/2705/draksec2ll7.png

Short polish-english dictionary: ;-)

standardowy - standard
tak - yes
domyslny - default

BUT IT STILL DOESN'T WORK :-(

What else can be done...!?

This terrible login/password screen is very annoying, especially for my
wife ;-) I'm trying to convince her to drop Windows XP and switch to
Mandriva... Because login/pass screen doesn't appear in XP - she
complains...

Please, help!

It is better to teach the student than to let the student set the
curriculum :-)

If she really cannot enter a user name and password, then there is no
sense trying to get here to use Linux. She will complain about
*everything*, because in the end Linux is *NOT* the same as XP (thank GOD.)

Have you explained to her that there will be a learning curve, but in
the end everything will be much easier? No viruses. No adware. No
need to worry what attachments she can and cannot open in an E-Mail, etc?

My 67 year old mother can barely log on to a computer, but she is very
glad she made the switch.

I don't agree with you. My wife can cope with PC very well. But actually
she stays at home, bringing up our two little sons (2 years; 3 months).
Younger of them is often carried by my wife on hands because of crying
:-( In this situation necessity of typing login name and password is nasty.

Thats a reason why I want do enable automatic login...

If you have children too then you should understand.

She is informed very well.

I've never said we aren't.

Hallo Mr.yacoll, no need to feel ofended, this guys here told me to kiss
off a few times ;-), just kidding ;-) but one of them whips me constantly
for not trimming my posts, his name is short like a bit with a capitol B ;-)
Automatic login is no good, your children will soon try to login very
soon, and you'll be back with another question ;-)

Take care

I based the above on this statement from you: "This terrible
login/password screen is very annoying, especially for my wife ;-) I'm
trying to convince her to drop Windows XP and switch to Mandriva...
Because login/pass screen doesn't appear in XP - she complains... "

While they are very young, I do understand, but see below for when they
get a bit older ...

Actually, having children who are using your computer is the absolute
best reason I can think of *against* autologin. I don't know about you,
but I would prefer that any damage a child might do, either accidentally
or intentionally, be localized to their own personal account. If they
aren't old enough to enter a username and password, then so much the
better. Again, you don't want them just starting the thing up and going
to town.

Well, given the new information, I don't agree with your position, but I
understand it. It is certainly a decision you should be making since it
involves your family, not mine.

You did say you were having trouble convincing her two switch from XP to
Linux, and cited the need to enter a login and password as her
complaint, without elaborating on *why* that was an issue. Now that you
have elaborated, I fully understand your position. I may not agree with
you, but I will fight to my death to defend your right to your own
opinion on the matter!
