Back up

Posted: 09-12-2003, 01:26 PM
I recently installed an ew DVD writer and in the process XP stopped
recognising either my existing CD writer nor the new DVD WRiter. I got on
to the MS Knowledge Base and found an article that said this frequently
happens and I have to go into Reigistry and delete a couple of entries. But
first I must back up my Registry using Accessories, System Tools/Backup.
Well I do not have a 'backup' in System Tools and cannot find anywhere in
the help file how to access it or reinstall it if it has got deleted
somehow.
Can anyone help with this please.

Alan,

It sounds to me, the problem is with hardware. As this has happened after
installing another IDE device, it may either be due to cables or the jumper
settings. The problem may not the registry (the upperfilters, lowerfilters
key you are referring)

See if it will uninstall correctly if you reinstall it on top of itself then
try and uninstall it again.

You need a CD burner. If you have such a burner, any CD-R or RW disk would
be appropriate. Failing that, if you have a separate partition on your hard
drive, you could back up your data to that drive, then do what's necessary
on the XP drive and then restore your data from the other partition.

Beyond that, the response to your question is not a matter of instructional
steps, it's a matter of having the necessary tools in the form of a device
such as a burner and the proper media.

Thank You for your speedy help I do have a burner and CD-R disks but everytime I tell my back up wizard to use drive E it says
"The backup file name could not be used.
"E:\BackUp.bkf"
Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access."
I have tried in vain to change the name of the file but I get the same error message.

Using NTBackup? Create the *.BKF files on the hard drive. Then transfer
them to CDR. To restore, copy these files back to the hard drive. May need
to remove the Read Only attribute by right clicking the files, selecting
Properties and unchecking the appropriate box. Next update the NTBackup
catalog to include those files (see NTBackup help file). Then use NTBackup
to restore.
