Default Backup no longer takes DAT tape?

Hi all,

I have a Seagate DDS-4 DAT tape backup. Backup doesn't list this as an
option in the list of destinations for the backup, only HDDs and DVD-Rs.
The tape drive is configured in Vista, and shows up as fully operational in
Device Manager. Is Microsoft going to stop supporting tape drives in Vista?

When I tried using Vista Backup words to the effect of "its not
finished yet" were mentioned, maybe DAT backup will be in the release
candidate version. Trying to backup to DVD was also a failure (for me)
so I guess it really isn't finished yet. Meanwhile you can back it up
with a Acronis or PartImage boot disk, and possibly Norton Ghost 10 if
you are lucky.

I tried a PartImage backup and recovery and have ended up doing a
reformat but then I think I screwed up the PartImage set up so I am
not blaming that one on Vista.

Thanks. I didn't think they would drop DAT.

I have an HP TC4100 Netserver that I use for testing etc and I installed
ActionPack Vista Ultimate Beta on it and was similarly disappointed to
discover the apparent dumping of DAT based backup! It seems a strange
ommision when many IT professionals have a DAT drive to backup multiple
machines. I doubt it'll be gone from the next Server release so it seems a
strange move to leave it out of Vista. Maybe they're leaving that door open
for 3rd party developers but that goes against Microsoft's current
"everything's already in there" approach!

Default RE: Backup no longer takes DAT tape?

I have read that microsoft dropped tape support (even though the hardware
level drivers load fine) because disk based backup is cheaper..

they are really off base here and missing the point.. yes if you consider
the cost of the backup hardware disk based is cheaper in the short run.. but
consider how much it costs to get the same amount of disk as 100 sdlt ii
tapes and do weekly backups of a terrabyte.. it is much much more expensive
to do this on disk and in addition you need one central machine to backup all
machines in your company or home network.. and the fact that vista ultimate
has no support for this and there is no 3rd party backup that I can find is
very very dissapointing..

I have an sdlt ii tape drive and a sdlt 1 10 tape autoloder and this is just
at my home since I got them cheap off ebay.. I regularly backup all the 9
machines my family has including the tivo movie backps and it takes about 400
gig per pop..

the fact that I cannot currently do this in vista leaves me without a choice
but to not use it or dual boot.

also anyone know how to turn off the active x popup blocking but only for
one site..
we use imail web based email and i have added it to trusted zones but it
still will not load the home page correctly without the active x blocking
check and then another confirm popup..
