Backup to XP from Vista

I am trying to backup my Vista laptop to my old xp laptop. Both computers
are networked and it is running fine, I have no trouble axcessing the
folders.
When I try to do a backup to the XP machine I am asked for an ID and
password. None of the ones setup on any of the computers work. I get an
error saying 'no mapping between account names and security ID's was done'
(0x80070534)
How do i map the account names so i can do a backup?

Hi Steve. You need to have a matching user account and password on both
machines. That should work.

Ok, got a bit further, now I get a meessage

The network share could not be accessed for the following reason:

You need Full Control permission for the network share. Make the user a
co-owner of the share, with full control. The network share cnnot be on a
computer running Windows XP Home. (0x81000002A)

I am set as administrator, should one not be? How do i make the user a
co-owner with full control?

Not sure if this will help and may not but!!!

i had a hassle with internet connection re e-mail sometime ago

i was asked by my ISP tec deprt for error message code

it started like this 0X81000 etc
they stopped me before the end of it
and said this was a firewall error code

it was and after resetting firewall all worked correctly

so------- it may be a firewall problem
but dont take that a gospel

Hi Steve. Here's the procedure for sharing:

Under Permission Level, click the arrow next to the permission level for
that person or group, and then do one of the following to set sharing
permissions:

. Click Reader to restrict the person or group to viewing files in the
shared folder.

. Click Contributor to allow the person or group to view all files,
add files, and change or delete the files that they add.

. Click Co-owner to allow the person or group to view, change, add,
and delete files in the shared folder.

Wow this is difficult.

tried following the instructions, but find nothing called 'Share' in the
tool bar, on the XP or Vista machine.

Am I to chose the folder on the XP machine and find the permissions, or is
this done on the Vista machine, the folder is already set to share and shows
up on the Vista machine.

I am so confused.

Ok I have checked and that all machines on my network have the same ID's and
passwords and are all at the same level.

I can backup XP to XP no problem, no password needed

I can back up XP to Vista, no password needed

I CANNOT backup Vista to XP, password needed, with and error of

I am missing something on the vista machine, how do I map the id's to the xp

that if the systems were in a domain rather than a workgroup then it might
work better.

However, on Vista I can't even backup to a spare drive 100+GB that I have
just for backups because Vista's backup doesn't even list it. The "why I
can't see hard drivers?" link takes you to a feature FAQ that doesn't even
have this question.

I am suspecting that Vista is having serious compatibility problems with XP.
Looking at the number of posts in various newsgroups and searching the
internet it is a common problem. There appears to be no single answer to the
solution.

Have to hope that Microsoft is working on a fix.

It is really odd that I can backup to the vista machine from XP, but not he
other way. That tells me that ID's are mapped, just not on Vista
