barely audible sound only

I have been having problems with my sound for a few weeks. I couldn't get any
sound at all until I figured out that one of the sound drivers wasn't
installed, which is weird because it worked just fine before that. Now I get
sound, only the volume is very low. The volume controls are all slide up to
the maximum and so is the control on iTunes, but the music is barely audible.
Any suggestions?
