I'd say that one machine set aside for development work would seem
reasonable.

The machine should be clearly explained as a developmental one in which
colleagues willing to participate should feel no compulsion to do so.
In other words, it it is left alone that will be fine, if a queue arises
to use it then they have to be tolerant.

If this meets the approval of governors and senior managers a beta of
Office 2007 should also be installed in my opinion.

The idea is to let those whom wish to blossom: blossom with no
disrespect to those more cautious of newer technologies.

It should not be a mission critical machine. So for example, if it goes
belly up, no one should fume.

trust me when i say that nothing mission critical ever happens in a school
staffroom.

can you tell me if office 2007 beta 2 works with vista? i tested the beta 1
& it would not with vista and i kinda gave up after that.

I use Office 2007 beta 2 with no issues with beta 2 of Vista. It will take
some getting used to, but personally, I find it easier then any previous
version of Office.

I have an online learner who should have had Office 200/2003 on her
computer BEFORE enrolling but slipped through the pre-enrolment
counselling session.

She was not able to afford even the academic variant of Office so
downloaded the Office 2007 beta.

It looks as if she is going to complete a 9 months course in about 3 months.

Please pass my compliments on to the Office 2007 team.

I'm glad you posted as my second post above was a bit strong (please
excuse it along the lines of there is a wider audience in which
maintaining standards is important)

Office 2007 beta on Vista beta 2 64 bit (build 5384) runs very sweet
indeed. it seems a fresh install is better than an upgrade but on
networked computers ... It may be a good idea to contact Microsoft UK
just in case (there seems to be an early adopters thing on the go so
possibly room for reasonable compromise/arrangements?)

The trouble is that I think Office 2007 beta expires in December
(learner colleagues in this NG to advise?) But even then it gives a
September - December appreciation window for colleagues at your school
should all/some/any be willing to give the newer technologies a go.

I really would advise against a global install. One computer is enough
and it will/may give you (plural) some insights into how UAC/UAP works
or may work in Vista.

Can the computer handle a 64 bit OS or is it constrained to 32 bits?

I guess MS has a lot of contacts in the UK but .. well, who knows?

I am sure people will be quite thrilled/threatened at seeing a
developmental machine after returning to the new academic year?

By the way, Expression Graphics Designer and it's close relative
Expression 3 will work on XP but it is better to leave that to a
developmental machine possibly one and the same?

don't give it a second thought. your original post gave me a few ideas to
mull over especially the expressions which i hadn't heard of before.

i think i'm just gonna go for it, 1 x vista machine with office 2007 & see
what the reaction is like. whatever happens, we have a rolling renewal
programme and, probably in march, we should get some machines with vista
preloaded on it. so it is coming, i just wanna introduce them to it gently.
any of the luddites out there can choose to avoid it but for those who are
interested, it should offer a nice little distraction.

i don't actually take up this role til monday, 21st august 2006, so i'm not
sure what platform the mnachines are but if they are 64-bit machines, my copy
of vista came with a 64-bit version. so i might just go the whole hog & whack
that on to see what happens. whatever happens it;ll be a learning experience
for us all.
