Blank screen after bootup

Sorry if this is been brought up before, but I'm having a problem with my
wife's Vista installation that just began this morning. She's been running
RC1 since it was released a few weeks ago, and everything was great with no
hint or suggestion of trouble until she tried to boot up this morning. All
that shows up now is a completely blank screen with just the build number
(5600) in the lower right corner. The mouse pointer works fine (but the mouse
buttons don't appear to). I've tried to boot in Windows 'Safe Mode' (defaults
to low res graphics), but I get the same result. Any ideas or suggestions?
