Default boot to xp in safe mode

I'm trying to boot in to safe mode onto my xp install from the dual boot with
xp and vista. f8 will only work for the vista install, and holding shift
won't work when i selecet the xp install. Does anyone know a way that i
should be able to boot up the windows install in safe mode?

Hello,

When your computer starts, you should be presented with a menu from which
you can select either "Earlier version of windows" or windows vista.

If you select "Earlier version of windows" and press enter, you should be
able to press F8 and get to the advanced boot options menu for Windows XP.

Can you boot into XP in normal mode? Run msconfig, click on the boot.ini
tab, check /safeboot.

when i have "Earlier version of windows" selected the option for advanced
boot options menu no longer shows up. It actually shows up when i push down
to selected the vista install, and then wheni push up for earlier versions
the option disappears

Which means that when you choose to boot into XP you must use whatever
method to intercept the boot process and go into safe mode that you normally
used on your machine before Vista was installed.

This is expected ... you have to press enter when you select "Earlier
version of windows", and then Press F8.

You see, Windows Vista installs a brand new boot loader that doesn't work
with windows xp...

what happens is, when you select "Earlier version of windows" and press
enter, the Vista boot loader loads the Windows XP boot loader.

So, right after you press enter on "Earlier version of windows", you will
need to press F8 very fast, so the windows xp boot loader sees it and lets
you start in safe mode.

Yes, that certainly works on my dual boot. Press enter to select XP and then
press F8.
