C&C Generals

Posted: 10-15-2003, 06:10 AM
The problem I have is that when I start a game program,
after a while the program minimizes and I see nothing but
DESKTOP. I think it is a problem with XP because the same
programs have been installed under 98 and no problems.
The 2 programs are both game software, 1 C&C Generals and
2 Ground Control. I know that I could play them under 98
but I should be able to play them under XP.

I have an Intel 1.7GHZ Pentium 4 system, 256 MB DDR Ram,
ATI Radeon 7000 64MB video card installed in a SiS 4X AGP
slot,AC '97 Integrated Sound, Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2,RC 2.2 Build 2600 and the
latest DVD and CDRW with drivers XP compliant installed.
I also have McAfee VirusScan. I have updated all drivers
and any hardware to XP Compatiblity so I KNOW this is not
the problem. This seems to be the common answer by techs
across the board for what problem people may have.

Hi Avrc,

I had to use Windows 98 Compatibility mode to get
my EA games to work when I installed XP. Here's how...

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select
Windows 98

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.

Of course, let's not forget to check for any patches or updates for that game.
A good place to look is: http://www.fileplanet.com/section.aspx?s=174&v=90002

Update your video card drivers (www.nvidia.com) to the latest WHQL certified
drivers.

Update your mothboard chipset drivers.

Hi Becks,

I think you should upgrade your CPU before upgrading
your video card. A slow CPU will just cause a bottleneck
effect for your AGP card, no matter how fast it is. I do
agree that the MX needs upgrading, as it's a little behind
the times technologically, and won't work properly with
some games, and with other games it won't work at all.

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :-)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Mainboard Monitoring Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to remove all
extra devices, network cards, extra RAM sticks, modem, scussi card,
sound card, unplug CD drives (if not needed to verify CD), and then
try the game again. If the problem is solved look into a 400 watt P/S.

4. Test your RAM using: http://www.memtest86.com/memt30.zip
after you extract that zip file, click on the README.txt file for the
instructions on how to create the boot floppy to test your RAM.

Hi Brecks,

You already have one of the best Athlon based Motherboards,
why not fit it with one of the finest Athlon Processors <g>:
http://www20.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030623/index.html

That CPU should fit your board, I looked for any information
to the contrary and found none. Double check with the reseller
beforehand though since stranger things do happen with PC's. ;-)
