Camera wizard stopped working with card adapter

Posted: 09-01-2003, 07:36 PM
When we first had our computer with XP we would load our
card adapter for our memory stick and then a wizard would
come up asking for a subject for all pictures and whether
we wanted them deleted after it was finished transfering
off the stick.

All the pictures on the stick would end up with the same
subject name and then be numbered directly after (ie.
Disneyworld01, Disneyworld02, etc.)

It has stopped doing this with the adapter and I am having
to manually transfer the files with no way to rename them
to include the subject of the trip/occasion.

Any idea why the wizard won't recognize the adapter card
anymore. (p.s. It won't recognize my memory stick or
compact flash adapters).

Thanks
Ursula

If all you need is to bulk rename, you can do this easily with XP.

Download the photos to a new folder.

Open the folder. Hold the Ctrl key down and press the letter A. This will
select (highlight in blue) all the files in the folder.

Right click on the first file (important to right click on the first file
because renaming will start from there).

Click on Rename on the opening menu.

Type in the name you want, to replace the current name. Any system will
work, such as year, month, event. For example type in:

2003_09_Virginia Beach Vacation (1).jpg

and press Enter.

XP will automatically rename all the files (1), (2), (3), etc.

Two important things when renaming using the above method.

1. Look at the name of the above file, you must include a space between the
last character of the file name and (1)

2. When you rename, don't forget to add .jpg after (1). If you forget, XP
will warn you, so enter .jpg after this warning. If you don't, you will not
be able to open the file.

You can rename anytime and as many times as you want. You are not dependent
on the wizard to rename. You can rename portions of files in a folder, just
select the group you want and right click on the first one and rename from
there.

You can do even better than this. Suppose you want a slide show and you want
the last three pictures taken to be the first three or in between some other
photos. Easy to do. Open the folder in thumbnail view, use your mouse to
place them in the order you want. Select all the photos and rename. The (1),
(2), (3), etc will be added in the order you placed the thumbnails.

Convenient if you want to make a slide show of pictures from different
folders. Just make a new folder, copy the photos you want in the new folder,
place the thumbnails in the order you want and rename.

Different ways to try to repair the Autoplay window for downloading from
either a camera or card reader.

Go from steps I to V, although step V may not be needed.

I. Connect your camera to your computer, power it on and make sure you have
pictures on your memory card. Make sure your batteries are good or better
yet, use your AC adapter if your camera came with one. If you are trying
with a card reader, just connect it with a memory card inserted and with
pictures on the memory card.

II. Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press Enter
Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...
This will take a few seconds to run.

III. Go to the following site:
http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff...ds/autofix.exe

and download the autofix.exe file in one of your folder. Once done, double
click on this file. A window will open. Follow the directions on the screen.

Once done, turn off the camera and reboot.

IV. Power the camera on, wait 10-15 seconds for XP to recognize it, you
should hear some beeping sound and the window should now open giving you the
option of downloading photos from the camera.

V. You may have to set the options for this window.
Click on My Computer, your camera should be listed there under Devices with
Removable Storage. Right click on it and click on Properties. In the opening
window, click on the Autoplay tab and under Select, scroll to Pictures to
select it. Select the button Prompt me...

Here are previous fixes at the Microsoft FAQ page.

Go this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...aq/default.asp

Fourth item from the top of the page. Two fixes are presented. One is to
edit the registry, the second one is to download Tweak UI and do the repair
with it. If you are comfortable editing the registry, go ahead.

If not, download Tweak UI.

Once you download the Tweak UI file in one of your folders, double click on
it to install it.

Once this is done, click on Start and click on All Programs. Look for Power
Toys for Windows XP. Click on it and Tweak UI will be listed. Click on it to
get is started.

A window will open. Click on the + sign next to My Computer, then click on
the + sign next to Autoplay. Then, click on Types. Check the boxes for
Autoplay Drive Types and click OK.

Sorry for the top post reply.:-)

I just wanted to say thanks for these instructions. I just subbed to this
newsgroup this morning desperately trying to figure out how to restore my
Camera and Scanner Wizard. My aunt's is not responding anymore either and I
help her. This was one of the first posts I came across out of over
7,000.:-) Was that luck?? LOL

Anyhoo, this was the thing that did the trick, and I just want to say Thank
You so much to Yves for his answer to Ursula- it helped us as well.

Thanks again,

Wendy
