can I back-up only new files in Home Edition?

Posted: 08-17-2008, 12:58 AM

Hi everyone,
I keep backing up files to an external hard drive and every time it
makes a complete copy, and soon fills the hard drive with copies. Then
if I delete the oldest I may lose things in there that are not in
recent back-ups. How can I remedy this in Vista Home edition?
Thanks.

Buy a bigger external hard drive. Or two. Or three.

What I do: I allow weekly automatic backups to continue until I fill my 160
GB external hard drive. When full, I delete all the backups and start over
with a new backup. I find that backups after the first one are incremental
backups, and I get about three months before I have to start over. I may
opt for a larger external hard drive someday, but this works ok for me right
now. Just one way...

If you want to back up files to an external drive, Microsoft has a nice
program to do that: SyncToy
It keeps an exact copy of the files you selected and it won't fill the
drive with new copies.
