can I join a domain and also have a workgroup?

Posted: 10-19-2003, 01:05 PM
I'm using xp-pro and here's what I want to do:
Use my laptop at home as part of my homenetwork (ie. with
workgroups all using xp-pro) and also use the laptop at
work as part of my company's domain-based network (OX-
10). Right now it seems I can do one or the other - like
if I join the domain at work, then when I get home I
can't connect to the computers in my homenetwork because
they aren't in that domain. Is there a way to do both, or
to have different user logons for home and work (this
didn't seem possible because to join a domain I have to
change the properties of mycomputer). If I change the
properties of Mycomputer every time I get home or go to
work, then not only is that a pain that requires
restarting the pc each time, but I also need my work
administrator to admit me to the domain every single
morning. I'd really like to be able to move between home
and work networks without a hassle. Any help would be
much appreciated!

Heather,

That is what the XP "Alternate network configuration" feature is supposed to
assist with.

To use the Alternate Configuration feature:
On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connections.
Click Network Connections.
Right-click the local area network (LAN) or high-speed Internet connection
that you want to configure and click Properties.
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Click the Alternate Configuration tab.
