Can I manually download critical updates?

Thank you for your help.

As I wrote in my original message, I have tried the Update
Catalog and since I can't figure out which updates are
needed for any specific XP system I chose all the updates
available for an XP 32-bit system.

After the download finished, I ended up with dozens and
dozens of subdirectories, each one apparently having one
update in the form of an executable.

Am I supposed now to put all these files on a CD, and go
from PC to PC (I need to update 5 XP systems that are on
dialup connections) and go to each one of the dozens of
subdirs and manually run the executable for each update?

This doesn't sound very reasonable to me. What do the
people who have 50 systems to update do (whether they are
or not on a network), they manually run each and every
update on each machine?

I must be missing something. I was expecting to be able to
download the comprehensive update from the catalog, and
run one executable which will complete all the updates,
not run each update separately.
