Can not load User Profile - Using default

Posted: 01-27-2005, 12:37 PM
Windows XP SP2 - Home Edition
AMD64 3500;
1GB RAM;
160GB UDMA drive c;
160GB SATA drive d;
CD-R and DVD
NVidia video card

New build machine this week. Everything was working fine until today.
I have not installed any new software in the last couple of days and have a
check-point from before last software was installed.

During boot up I get a splash screen stating something like Windows is
loading.
A small pop-up appears after sometime stating that the user profile can not
be loaded - using default. (Error - cyclic timing ; or wording similar to
this)

Windows then continues to load up - but very very slowly; 10 minutes or more
to start up.
Once running everything appears fine.

There is only one profile on the machine - mine - and I am the administrator.

My user profile was corupt so I created a new profile following guidance
found in knowledge base. Lost a few things but no big deal. (My Outlook files
had been corupted as well).
My profile was corupt due to hard drive errors. Not sure if this is because
of the drive failing or the IO on the motherboard failing.

Run CHKDSK on the drive - it SOUNDS like either a bad hard drive or bad
controller..

It could also be just a fluke. Create a new user and log into it with that
user. User profiles CAN become corrupted.

Thank you Shenan - have done so - I needed to do a XP repair after this and
then re-install a few applications. I suspect that it is a controller
problem. I'll try and borrow a hard drive from the IT Manager at work and run
that for a few weeks to try and isolate the problem.

I changed out the hard drive ribbon and then did chkdsk c: /f /v followed by
chkdsk c: /r - noted the files in bad sectors and re-installed these. My
machine now runs nice.
Not sure if I needed both /f and /r but heck - it was only a a couple of
hours to run. Quicker than the drive to the local hardware shop.
