Can only display PDF documents when protected mode is off

What third-party security applications are installed (e.g., anti-virus;
anti-spyware, firewall)?

Try resetting the security settings for the Internet zone to the defaults and
see if that fixes the problem. I don't know whether it will, but it is worth
a shot.
