Can the vista partition be moved?

Posted: 03-19-2007, 06:10 PM
I was wondering if it is possible to move the partition vista is on. I have
to create a dual boot with windows xp but I dont want to go thru the whole
process of reinstalling vista again. Currently the setup is vista on C: drive
but in the end it will be Windows Xp on C: drive and Vista on D:. Can this be
done?

You want to install both on the same physical disk? If yes, you don't
need to move anything, you probably need to shrink the Vista partition
to make enough space for XP. Does this sound right so far? Or are you
talking about different physical disks?

Yeah, but the problem is that I use sysprep for my installs to save time. I
tried moving a working vista partition to D: and then use sysprep of xp on
c:. I used vista boot pro to restore the bootloader for vista. Vista boots ok
but I can log in. It is like it is not seeing that I typed anything for the
username or password. When I hit the enter for the login I dont get any
errors or anything all. After about 15 seconds or so the system just shuts
down. It is kinda weird. I may just keep vista at C: and see if it will let
me do a normal install of windows xp to d:

No, it can not be done. There are already thousands of registry entries that
point to Vista being on C: drive. You installed programs also point to THEM
being on drive C: They would all have to be modified to point to D: drive.

There are other problems also but because of the former insurmountable
problem, I won't go into them.

Just install XP to drive D:
