Can Vista Home Premium network with Win 98?

Posted: 08-07-2007, 03:56 PM
Hi,

I have just bought a new laptop that was supplied with Windows Vista Home
Premium. I have added it to a wireless network so that I can transfer data
from my old laptop, which is running Windows 98 (not SE).

Both laptops can access the Internet via the router but neither laptop can
see the other. I have enabled file sharing on both laptops.

I even tried to connect the laptops together using an ad-hoc network. Still
no joy.

So I am left wondering whether these two operating sytems can network at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Nick

They should. If turn off the firewall, can you ping each other by IP? Or this link may help,

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your reply. I will check out the links you have provided and do
the ping tests.

I have a question regarding "the firewall". Until I purchased my new laptop,
I considered my router's firewall was adequate and never had any problems --
ie my old laptop has no firewall. My new laptop has now added a further two
firewalls into the equation -- the one built into Vista and the one provided
by Norton Protection Center. Should I have all three enabled?

When I try to set up an ad-hoc network, I turn off the router -- so that's
one less firewall to worry about. I will turn off the Vista and Norton
firewalls in my new laptop and see if this helps to establish a working
ad-hoc network.

Thanks for your help.

The above might help. You have to make sure the Workgroup name is the same
for both computers; and in Vista go to Network sharing, to make sure network
discovery, file sharing is turned on ; passowrd protect is turned off.

Thanks, Mick, I didn't know the two laptops had to be in the same workgroup;
I will try that. The other things you mentioned have already been set up that
way.

Many thanks for your help.

UPDATE
---------

I put both laptops into the same workgroup and I now have some connectivity.
The Vista laptop can access the files on the Win 98 laptop but not the other
way round. That's OK as all I want to do is transfer the data from my old Win
98 laptop to my new Vista laptop.

I will now mark up this thread as "question answered". Thanks to everyone
for their help.

Nick
