Can you save a Bitlocker key to a SD Card

Posted: 01-01-2009, 05:52 PM

Trying to install Bitlocker on my Dell XPS M1530. It doesn't have TPM so
I plan to store the Bitlocker Key on a USB device. Dell Support tells me
my 8 in 1 memory card reader is a USB device. I mention that because I
want to save the Bitlocker Key to an SD Card. Easy to pop in / out and
easy to carry.

Unfortunately, the Bitlocker setup only recognizes a USB thumb drive.
Curiously, I can use an SD card as a ReadyBoost drive but not to store
the Bitlocker key.

Anyone try this or have any suggestions?

Greg

The drive has to be recognised by the BIOS as a floppy drive. This is why
you can use an external floppy drive or a USB stick, but not an external
hard drive. It's also why you can't use an SD card (unless there's a BIOS
out there that provides a floppy interface to an SD card).

The Bitlocker code that pulls in the USB token is actually very low-level,
and can't rely on any Windows drivers. It must rely on only access provided
by the BIOS itself.

Dell Customer Support thought it should be achievable but directed me to the
pay support line to help. My work around was to connect a $1 card reader to
my USB hub.

Thanks for your insights.
