can´t turn laptop speakers off

This is an open ended question. First, what make/model of laptop do you have?
Next, what type of soundcard does it have installed? Do you have ports for
headphones and/or external speakers? We are not mind readers, capish?
When I plug my headphones in my Dell laptop, the speakers shut off.
Have you gone to the manufacturers website for assistance and/or information?
