cancel print queue job

It takes FOREVER (maybe 3-5 minutes) to cancel a job that
is in the print queue. Doesn't seem to matter whether I
am connected, directly via a parallel cable, to an HP
printer at a job site or to an Epson in my office.

Any suggestions on how to speed up the process?

Dell Inspiron laptop, WinXP
