| Alright. I have looked at help files, I have searched all over the microsoft website, I have looked at previous question/answer topics from this section, but I cannot find out the answer to my problem. I have a laptop with Windows vista home premium, and a desktop with Windows XP Home. They connect through a wireless network. vista can access XP no problem. XP cannot access Vista with no problem: vista shows up in the network places, when I turn the password requirement to share off in vista, I can even access Vista from XP. BUT: when I turn the password requirements to share on in vista, I cannot access my vista PC from my XP PC. HOWEVER: the original accounts on both computers have the EXACT SAME name, AND the exact same password, even the password hint is the SAME! STILL I cannot access my Vista PC from my XP PC. I have tried creating another account on both PCs with the exact same specifications, but even then as long as the password requirement to share is set as on in Vista, I cannot access the files on my Vista PC. Always, the error message that pops up is: "\\**name of Vista PC** is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." Please, if anyone knows what is wrong with anything I have done (and yes, network sharing of files and printers is definitely set to on) tell me here. If you have need of any other information (and yes, they use the same workgroup name) just ask. | Guest

| Folder Security and Share Permissions Folder security defines what users can do within folders. To configure folder security, right-click a folder in the Computer window, and then click the Security tab. Share permissions must match the folder security for access to a share to be successful. For example, if the share permissions allow access to both Bob and Sally, but the folder security only allows Bob, then Sally will not be able to access the share. You must add the Sally account to the folder security settings. For another example, when a user disables password protected sharing, the default share permissions for new shares include the Everyone group. If the folder security specifies access for the Users group, another computer that is not using an account on the sharing computer will not be able to access the share. Another computer that is not using an account on the sharing computer will be using the Guest account, which is not a member of the Users group. To allow this other computer to access the share, you must add the Guest account to the folder security settings. around here. This same problem is not uncommon among XP computers. I don't have a Vista-specific solution, but perhaps the problem and its solution is still the same. If nobody else comes forward with a better solution, you could use http://winhlp.com/wxnet.htm and fill in the form. It allows you to specify exactly this error message. In Windows XP and Vista, besides setting up a local account and activating it for network access, that account (or a group in which that account falls) must have an entry in the Local Security Policy. For XP / Vista Home editions, you have to use NTRights, and assign the group "Everyone" Network Logon rights. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/advanced-file-sharing-tweaks-in.html#NTRights> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0....html#NTRights Then make sure that your account that you're using is a member of "Everyone". -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. and tried the many solutions, and the endless "web links" for a solution, and they didn't work. Then I read about many more solutions, then more, then the MVPs want me to try more! All the while my XP and Vista systems perform flawlessly, except for XP's ability to access anything on Vista except the Public Folder (which does work). This is a problem that most XP users have, and just live with it -- they use the Public Folder like I do. Many people have the problem and don't report it. It's a problem that could be cured by allowing the option of Simple File Sharing, but NOOO. Is Microsoft listening? No. EW | Guest

| EW, I cannot access my vista PC at all. I cannot get into it to so much as see the Public Folder, let alone getting the Public folder to work. If anyone knows or can find a solution that will allow me to access my Vista PC without turning off the requirement of needing a similar account to access it, then I will be happy. Just note: I might not have mentioned it in my previous post (I cannot remember) but if on my Vista PC, in the Network and Sharing Center, I turn off "Password Protected Sharing", everything works. If I turn it on, it all stops working - as in, on my XP PC, when I view my workgroup computers, my Laptop Vista PC shows up as being in the workgroup. However, when I double click on it to access its files and folders, the warning message that I quoted in my first post appears. This is my problem, not getting other networked folders to share. If I even only get the "Public" folder to share, that would make my day. | Guest

picked the bad ones. The solution I recommended does work, not only in Windows XP, but also in Windows Vista, as I now know. Chuck is giving it to you again. One can never be entirely sure, but all indications are that this is the same, well-known problem, usually caused by installing bad third-party security software, like the bad Symantec-Norton stuff that many experts recommend against, and by some other, similar software. Out of curiosity, do you have any third party security software installed? Or any VPN software? Hans-Georg -- No mail, please. | Guest

exactly matched what I have on the vista machine. Once I logged on to this I was able to instantly access the laptop (vista) on the network and could view the public and shared folders. Prior to this I couldn't get any access what so ever. Not even to expand the laptop to see what shares were available. | Guest
