Cannot Activate Windows XP Pro

Recently my hard drive crashed and I had to take my
computer to be repaired.
The people at the computer store repaired the hard drive
but did not activate my copy of Windows.
I continue to try to activate it but even tho I am
connected to the net via cable modem I get a message that
I am not connected when I am trying to activate my copy
of windows.
Can anyone explain why this is happening and what I can
do to get my windows activated with the keys?
Any help is most appreciated.
